Learning About Plants - Erik Jollof, YLA

By Erik Jollof, YLA 2023

For my first job I really wanted an experience that would be fun and enjoyable to work for; being at Project GROWS was, in fact, the definition of fun and enjoyable. The experience with learning different techniques to take care and maintain vegetables and even the communication between the people I worked with was very helpful and I’m grateful to have learned from such amazing people.

The days here were often preps, maintaining plants, and my favorite on some of the days was harvesting. The work could be tedious, but it was never really boring. Working here has definitely improved my communication skills. I’m typically quiet when it comes to asking for help, but being at Project GROWS, I became more open to asking for help when I was stuck.

The one thing I like most about the job are the people here on the farm, getting to know the people I’m working with, and from time to time having funny conversations made the job more enjoyable because although we were working, we could have fun talking to each other. That made it feel like it wasn’t like a classroom in school. The most interesting, but tedious work, was mostly maintaining the plants.
